For Prospective Research Students and Fellows

If you are interested in a post-doc or PhD position under my supervision, I am glad to hear from strong, well-matched candidates. Here is how it works, and how to improve your chances:

  • PhD and post-doc positions in Denmark come with a research budget, full-time salary, no tuition fees, health insurance, and paid vacation time. A PhD student in Denmark is an employee.
  • I am generally interested in hiring people who are willing to collaborate closely with me and the rest of the team. We like fairly hands-on supervision: joint programming, writing, and brainstorming. If you are a lone wolf, you may still fit, but it would be wise to be open about that early on in our conversations.
  • Positions open only when funding is available. This generally requires either that I have an externally funded project awarded, or that you secure funding from another body to finance your project at ITU.
  • For post-docs, I am always interested in helping write proposals for Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellowships. If you are a strong post-doc applicant, I will invest my time in your application. ITU has a support program for fellowship applicants. Occasionally there are similar programs from other funding bodies, for example the Danish Data Science Academy. Get in touch if you are interested.
  • For PhD projects there is an open call at ITU once a year, in the winter. In general, this call is awfully oversubscribed, so I normally prefer not to support applicants for it. It is better to wait for calls specific to the SQUARE group.
  • Externally funded projects have a defined scope, but details can be adjusted during the planning phase, once you are hired. There are currently very few opportunities for student-proposed topics.
  • All job announcements are made public at https://www.itu.dk/om-itu/stillinger. In addition, I post positions under my supervision, as well as SQUARE group openings, on Mastodon and LinkedIn.
  • Follow me on Mastodon at @andrzej@dukla.ch or on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/wasowski/. I often pre-announce that an opening is coming, so following me is the best way to catch one early.
  • Applications that don’t engage with my actual research rarely get a reply, so it pays to read a few of my recent papers and understand the scope of the SQUARE group at ITU before getting in touch.
